Outdoor Water Conservation Tips
August 14th, 2008 Posted in Local News, Real Estate- Water your lawn only when it needs it. Watering frequently can be very harmful to your lawn. A good way to see if your lawn needs watering is to step on it. If it springs back up, you don’t need to water.
- Deep-soak your lawn. Don’t sprinkle. Deep watering encourages deep and solid root growth.
- Water during the cool parts of the day. Don’t water at dusk as that promotes growth of fungus. Early morning is much better. Adjust your sprinklers to insure you aren’t wasting water on walkways. Avoid watering when it is windy.
- Turn off the hose while washing your car. Use a bucket with soapy water to wash your car, and then use the hose to rinse.
- Use a broom to clean sidewalks. Using water to clean off a sidewalk uses hundreds of gallons of water.
- Check your pipes, hoses, faucets and couplings for leaks. Even a small leak can waste vast amounts of water during a 24-hr period.
- Put a layer of mulch around trees and plants. This will slow the evaporation of moisture.
- Last, incorporate drought-resistant trees and plants into your landscaping. Not only will you save money on your water bill, but you’ll be conserving water. Check with your local nursery…
