What To Do During a Power Outage

February 16th, 2009 Posted in Local News

Now, I know last night we had quite a bit of wind in Paso Robles, because I didn’t sleep through it.  Being so used to the quiet out in the country, the wind was not my friend last night, which is what made me think of what to do during a power outage.

Hands with ElectricityDuring an event of strong winds and heavy rainfall, you could experience trees, tree limbs or other vegetation coming into contact with power lines.

If you need to report a power outage, call PG&E’s outage line at 1-800-PGE-5002 to report it and get updates on restoration efforts in your neighborhood.

Here are a few tips for safety sake:

  • If you lose power, turn off and unplug all electric appliances, except one light so you know when power returns.  If you don’t do this, when the power is restored, you may overload your circuits.  Once you know power has returned, turn your appliances back on one at a time.
  • If you see a downed power line, assume it is live or carrying electric current.  This is VERY dangerous.  Do not try to touch or move it, and keep children and animals away.  Report downed lines to PG&E immediately.
  • Have a cell phone available.  Cordless phones will not work without electricity.
  • Have battery-operated flashlights with fresh batteries on hand at all times in case of an emergency.
  • If you have a second freezer and can do this, fill used liter-sized plastic water bottles with water and freeze so you can place them in your freezer/refrigerator to prevent food from spoiling.
  • Having a battery-operated radio with fresh batteries available is not a bad idea so that you can check for updates on storm conditions and power outages.
  • If you choose to use candles for lighting, beware…  Do not use candles near drapes, under lampshades or near indoor trees.  With the excitement of the storm and loss of electricity, you will probably retire to bed early, and you don’t want to wake up to a fire in your home.
