The Movie: Mama Mia!

Mama Mia! Saw this movie Friday at The Park Cinemas in Paso, and it was just what the doctor ordered! Glad I went to see it with a couple of girlfriends as my husband would have been bored out of his mind. This is definitely a feel-good chick flick… For all of you ladies, if you haven’t already seen it, do!

When the movie started, the first thought that came to mind was, “Where is the nearest exit?” but very soon after I was caught up in the fun. The camaraderie between Meryl Streep, Julie Walters and Christine Baranski is very evident throughout the movie, and their antics on screen can’t help but make you laugh and wish you were that carefree and spontaneous. Tanya, played by Baranski, is absolutely hilarious. I never knew Meryl Streep could sing, but she can do everything else. What was I thinking? Sophie, played by Amanda Seyfried, is absolutely adorable in this film.

Pierce Brosnan’s singing was pretty pitiful (I was forewarned), but since he is so darned cute, that made it bearable. Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsard give good performances as the other two men who may be Sophie’s dad.

Anyway, the scenes of Greece are spectacular, the women are wild and zany while reminiscing about the “good old days,” and when the movie ends, you’ll feel like you’ve just left a fabulously fun party. The upbeat ending and final scenes will leave you with a huge smile on your face even if you initially thought you would hate the film.

This soon-to-be DVD will be a good one to keep on the shelf for those days when you need a good dose of laughter and enthusiasm.
