As the year progresses, we will be sending you notifications on upcoming Oso Libre Events. We are all looking forward to sharing our wines and hospitality with our valued friends and customers. Wine ‘Cubs’ will have first access to reservations and to exclusive events and tastings. In addition, we will be launching a master calendar section on our web page, so please check here for all up to date event times and details. In conjunction with the Paso Robles Zinfandel Festival we invite you to enjoy small bite pairings with our Estate Nativo Zinfandel and unique Estate Zinfandel blends. Our single vineyard wines are of very limited quantity and have wonderfully distinctive attributes. It’s always interesting and fun to find just the right food pairing for Zinfandel that best highlights and compliments its qualities.

Time: 11am to 5 pm
Cost: $15 ; Wine Club Members $5

Paso Robles Zinfandel Festival March 20, 2010 in Paso Robles

The Paso Robles Zinfandel Festival will be held all weekend starting on March 19th, but the main event will be held on March 20th from 5:30 – 9:30 pm in Commercial Building 2 at the Paso Robles Event Center. Zinfully Important Person Tickets are $85, and the Zin Fan Del Tickets are $60. You can purchase tickets at www.pasowine.com or call (800) 549-WINE.

At this event, there will be, of course, wine tasting, local cuisine and the Wine Country Auction. The funds raised through the Wine Country Auction will be used to support the vineyard worker population, and a portion of the funds will be donated to health, education and community service programs for the local vineyard workers and their families.

In addition to the main event at the Paso Robles Event Center, 145 wineries will be hosting their own events throughout the weekend. Artists’ Reception at Studios on the Park in Paso Robles

There will be an Artists’ Reception at Studios on the Park in Paso Robles celebrating the art of Nancy Becker and Frank Armitage on February 20, 2010 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm.

Nancy Becker earned her BA in Art Education from the University of Colorado and also holds a BFA in Graphic Design from California College of Arts & Crafts. Art, horses and the western environment are her passions. She is also an accomplished silversmith, woodworker and lapidary artist.

A native Australian, Frank Armitage became involved in Mexican Mural Painting in the 1940′s. In 1952, he moved to Los Angeles to work for Disney Studios on animation backgrounds and layouts for feature films such as Sleeping Beauty, Man In Space, Mary Poppins, Peter Pan and The Jungle Book.

After retiring from Disney in 1989, Frank retired to Paso Robles where he continues to produce art at Studios on the Park. He is also available for commissioned work.

Paderewski Festival in Paso Robles November 12 – 15

November 12 through November 15, the Paderewski Festival will celebrate the life of Ignacy Jan Paderewski with special events and concerts in Paso Robles.

The Denali String Quartet will open the festival with a performance at Vina Robles Winery this evening at 6:00 pm.

Pianist William Koseluk will perform at Cass Winery in Paso Robles on Friday, November 13th, at 7:00 pm with a wine reception at 6:00 pm.

On Saturday, November 14th, at 4:00 pm, the winners of the 2009 Paderewski Young Pianists Competition will perform at the historic Paso Robles Inn Ballroom.

Also, on Saturday evening, pianist Hubert Rutkowski will perform at the Paso Robles Inn Ballroom at 8:00 pm. Wine reception begins at 6:30 pm.

Ignacy Jan Paderewski (1860 – 1941) was a virtuoso pianist and composer. His love of Paso Robles began in the year of 1914 and continued through 1939.

In 1914, Paderewski purchased Rancho San Ignacio and Rancho Santa Helena in Paso Robles, Ca, which encompassed 2864 acres. Throughout the years, he planted almond trees, fruit orchards and Zinfandel grapes.

In addition to Paderewski’s musical and political accomplishments, he is also remembered for being a pioneer in vine cultivation and credited with bringing Zinfandel grapes to California.

The City of Paso Robles offers a tremendous amount of activities for all ages, including trips, seminars and workshops, for all ages. Most are free, and the rest have minimal fees involved. Sherry’s Favorite Lemon Meringue Pie

Okay, this recipe is a little more labor intensive, but it always gets rave reviews!

9-inch baked pie shell

I cheat on this and buy the Pillsbury rolled pie pastry in the box. After many years of making my own pie pastry, I finally decided Pillsbury was as good or better than my own recipe and certainly a time-saver.

Filling:

1/3 cup cornstarch
1 & 1/2 cups sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 egg yolks slightly beaten
1/4 fresh squeezed lemon juice
2 tablespoons grated lemon peel
2 tablespoons butter

Meringue:

8 egg whites at room temperature
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
3/4 cup sugar

Line pie plate with pie pastry & bake shell. Let cool…
Make filling: In small saucepan, combine cornstarch, sugar & salt. Gradually add 1 & 1/2 cups of water and stir until smooth.
Over medium heat, bring to boiling stirring constantly, until smooth and boil for 1 minute.
Remove mixture from heat. Quickly stir half of the hot mixture into the egg yolks, mix well and then return egg yolk mixture back into sauce pan.
Over medium heat, return to boiling while stirring constantly, and boil 1 minute.
Remove mixture from heat and stir in lemon juice, lemon peel and butter. Immediately pour into the pie shell.
Preheat oven to 400F.
Make Meringue: In medium bowl, mix egg whites and cream of tartar at medium speed until soft peaks form when the beater is raised. (A KitchenAid Mixer comes in handy here, but you can use a hand-held mixer)
Gradually beat in 2 tablespoons of sugar at a time and beat well after each addition. Continue to beat until still peaks form when the beater is raised.
Spread meringue over hot filling sealing to the edge of the crust and make peaks in the meringue with back of a butter knife or spoon. Touch meringue with utensil and lift forming many peaks.
Bake 7 to 9 minutes or until meringue is golden.
Cool on a wire rack away from drafts for 1 hour before serving.

Two more bits of advice:

Keep an extra dozen eggs on hand just in case your meringue doesn’t whip up. This has happened to me more than once. Don’t know whether it is because the eggs aren’t fresh or I just whipped them too long.

Secondly, lemon meringue pie doesn’t last well in the refrigerator (ingredients tend to separate) so you may as well eat the whole pie:)

Pioneer Day Comes to Paso Robles

The first Pioneer Day Parade in Paso Robles happened in 1931 at a time when bank failures were at an all-time high. Sound familiar? This event is held each year so Paso Roblans can celebrate their history and the pioneers who built our quaint city.

At 7:00 am in the park, the volunteers start cooking huge pots of beans. The parade starts at 10:00 am, and that is followed by the bean feed at noon. This event has always been free; even the bean feed. Most downtown businesses close until after the parade so employees can celebrate with their families and friends.

This year’s parade featured community floats, marching bands, wagons, horse & mule teams, antique tractors and equestrian groups.

The City of Paso Robles will be hosting a career and job fair tomorrow, Tuesday, September 29, 2009 from 3:00 to 6:00 pm. It will be held at the Paso Robles City Hall library conference room, and the event is free to the public. If you are currently looking for employment on the Central Coast, you won’t want to miss this opportunity.

There will be workshops on interviews and writing resumes, how to apply for local government jobs and how to perform online job searches.
